Homeland Insecurity

Apparently John McCain isn't the only government official not using the computer much these days.

Sonia Pitt, the former homeland security and emergency management director for MnDOT who was fired after not returning from an out-of-town trip for TEN DAYS after the 35W bridge collapse, was recently fired from her new job at the Department of Homeland Security based on information they received from MnDOT.

As in, clearly they hadn't checked with her former employer (or turned on a television or perhaps GOOGLED HER NAME) before they hired her.

Seriously, guys. Look what happens when you Google "Sonia Pitt."

The Department of Homeland Security's response? According to the Star Tribune, they plan to Google the names of "more" of their potential employees.

Now, I was under the impression that if I were to apply for a job with the Department of Homeland Security, I would be subjected to some pretty extensive background checks that might include oh, I don't know, ANY research? I'm sure the Patriot Act allows for Googling.

I used to Google people's names when I interviewed them to teach ballroom dance and balloon art for Wisconsin Union Mini Courses. And I would decide not to hire people based on far less than misspending $26,000 of government funds.

This woman clearly sucks harder than Bob Costas could ever dream of sucking. I'm finding this whole thing more than a little disturbing.
